Chapter Eighty Nine is the 89th chapter of the Kaiju No. 8 manga series.

Summary[]

In a flashback, Soshiro's father praises Soichiro's flawless combat abilities, citing him as the Hoshina family's ultimate incarnation. Soshiro recalls that for as long as he can remember, he was seen as an inferior version of his older brother.

Cutting to the present, Soshiro backs away from Kaiju No. 12, both of his blades having been broken by the kaiju's surprise attack at the end of the previous chapter. He remarks that his opponent outshines Kaiju No. 10 in all aspects. No. 10 confirms that No. 12 is without a doubt the finished product. As it dawns on Soshiro that he and his suit are both rejects of superior siblings, No. 10 shouts for Hoshina to dodge as No. 12's leg plants firmly into the ground. Hoshina barely manages to avoid being decapitated as No. 12 instantly closes the gap and delivering a horizontal slash, destroying the entire wall of the airport.

Soshiro reaffirms that he and No. 10 are cutting down their enemy, asking Okonogi to deploy his katana as the kaiju suit grins with excitement. He notes that despite his efforts, he cannot bring out a release force higher than 83% and that a change of strategy is required to have any chance of winning. Though lamenting his inferiority in single-blade swordsmanship compared to his older brother, Soshiro holds the blade by his side.

In a more recent flashback, Soshiro and Okonogi discuss a backup measure to counteract the possibility that Kaiju No. 9 may have been observing his fight with No. 10. Okonogi remarks Soshiro's low aptitude for firearms, stating that his life is centered on the blade. Kaiju No. 12 assumes a stance and charges towards Soshiro, who responds by drawing his sword and delivering two cuts to No. 12 before sheathing it behind him, one of which severs the kaiju's left hand.
