Eiji Hasegawa (
Appearance[]
Eiji is a very tall, bald and muscular individual towering on most characters around him with big eyebrow-less red eyes, mild moustache and a huge scar on his left eye. He also has other scars on the sides of his head and on the left part of his jaw.[4]
He is seen wearing two different outfits:
- When on-duty, he wears the typical uniform of the Defense Force.
- While in battle, he wears his combat suit and a large stocky-looking battle armor with machine guns on his shoulders.[4]

Personality[]
Eiji is a professional and formal man who takes his job very seriously that he often clashes with Captain Gen Narumi's childish behavior for this reason, whom Eiji has unceremoniously kicked at least once.[4] For his inflexible demeanor on duty and for his usual leadership role in the First Division, Eiji is highly respected by anyone both in his own division and in others as seen when Third Division Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina seemed happy to see him.[1]
Plot[]
Kaiju No. 8 Captured Arc[]
When Kikoru Shinomiya transferred from the Third Division to the First Division, Eiji introduced her to Captain Gen Narumi only to find him playing around. After scolding him, Eiji and the rest of the Division engage with a massive kaiju in Kawasaki, successfully taking him down.[4]
He was then present during the meeting with Gen, Kikoru, Director General Isao Shinomiya and Kafka Hibino where the latter was transferred in the First Division under Isao's decision.[5]
The Kaiju Weapon Arc[]
After one of their afternoon trainings, Eiji informed Captain Gen Narumi and Kikoru Shinomiya that some kaiju attacked Shinagawa. He and the rest of the First Division then entered the area to neutralize the threats.[6]
The Compatible User Arc[]
Before the Anti-No. 9 Eastern Divisional Conference, Eiji welcomed Soshiro Hoshina and the rest of the Third Division at the Ariake Maritime Base before he then proceeded to bring them to the conference himself.[1]
A month later, Eiji informed Kafka Hibino and Kikoru Shinomiya that Leno Ichikawa became the first compatible person in history with Kaiju No. 6's weapon, much to Kafka's disapproval.[7]
Some time later, Eiji and other Defense Force upper echelons discussed fourteen recent usolved kaiju cases that were believed to be a No. 9-induced calamity with Eiji himself informing his colleagues that the Numbers Weapons users were ready to deploy.[8]
The Last Wave Arc[]
After the Second Wave of Identified Kaiju was neutralized [9], Eiji listened in horror as Akira Kurusu announced that Kaiju No. 9 appeared in Tachikawa.[10]
Power & Abilities[]
Overall Abilities: Eiji is the Vice-Captain of the First Division of the Defense Force (the strongest division) [4] and is implied to be a powerful combatant.
Abilities[]
- Leadership Skills: During battle, it's Eiji who commands the First Division around and orders the soldiers through fights,[4] allowing Gen Narumi to move more freely on the battlefield. Eiji is able to talk to his subordinates with authority and firmness, with them also following his words due to their respect for him.[3]
Equipment[]
- Combat Suit: Eiji wears the usual Defense Force combat suit in battle.[4]
- Respirator mask: Eiji wears a respirator mask along with his battle armor.[4]
- Battle Armor: In combat, Eiji wears a massive metal armor equipped with machine guns on the shoulders.[4]
Etymology[]
- The name Eiji is written in katakana (エイジ), which has no special meaning.
- Eiji's surname Hasegawa contains the kanji for "long, chief, boss" (長, ha), "valley" (谷, se) and "river, stream" (川, kawa/gawa).

- Eiji likes discipline, cleanliness, silence and symmetry.[3]
- Eiji's armor is reminiscent of that worn by the Marvel superhero War Machine.
