The Hoshina Family ( () (しな) 家, Hoshina-ka) is a renowed clan of swordsmen dating back to the Muromachi period.[1]

Known Members[]

Overview[]

The Hoshina clan of swordsmen has always been active in Kaiju-killing since its origins, with its current members serving in the Defense Force or being close to it. The Hoshinas have been cultivating their personal blade style, this still being used by the family members on the battlefield against Kaiju.

History[]

Since the Muromachi period, the Hoshina Family has been a clan of swordsmen and Kaiju-killers,[1] even taking action during the Great Fire of Meireki.[2] Since the Edo period, the souls of those who died killing Kaiju have been enshrined in Ryunei Shrine.[2]

To this day, the clan still cultivates its swordsmanship tradition among the family members with Soichiro Hoshina and Soshiro Hoshina being the family most remarkable talents in the current era.[3][4]

Fighting Style[]

Founded by the members of the Hoshina Family, the Hoshina Style ( () (しな) 流, Hoshina-ryū)[5] is the art of swordsmanship passed down by the clan. This style is so effective that, if used correctly, the user is able to easily injure Daikaiju or Identified Kaiju.[6][5][4] The style involves both a Dual-Blade Form (二刀型, Nitō-gata) and a Single-Blade Form (一刀型, Ittō-gata). Furthermore, the style possesses two main set of techniques, which can occasionally be used together.

Sword-Slay Technique[]

The Sword-Slay Technique (刀伐術, Katana ki-jutsu) is a style mainly centered on swing attacks, consisting of six forms, plus a seventh one created by Soshiro:

  • Number One: Air Slicer (一式: (から) () ち, Isshiki: Kara Uchi): A clean swing so fast that it gives the victim the idea of being slashed by an invisible sword.[6]
  • Number Two: Cross Slasher (2式: 交差討ち, Nishiki: Kōsa Uchi): A crossed dual attack able to target and penetrate the small gaps on the opponent's body.[7]
  • Number Three: Return Slasher (3式: 返し討ち, Sanshiki: Kaeshi Uchi): While running, the user throws a twisting crossed attack.[3]
  • Number Four: Wild Slasher (4式: 乱討ち, Yonshiki: Ran Uchi): An attack consisting in multiple sword slashes from various angles.[7]
  • Number Five: Mist Slasher (5式: 靄討ち, Goshiki: Moya Uchi): This attack is disguised as a dual x-shaped slash attack but is actually made of a third surprise low attack from the side.[6]
  • Number Six: Eightfold Slasher (6式: () () 討ち, Rokushiki: Yae Uchi): Presumably the strongest attack, meant as a finisher. An eight-pointed slash attack.[7]
  • Number Seven: 12-layered Strike (7式: (じゆう) () (ひとえ) , Nanashiki: Jūnihitoe): An attack created by Soshiro and exclusive to him. With the help of Numbers Weapon 10's tail, the user wields three swords to unleash an extremely fast twelve strike onslaught on the enemy.[8]

Quick-Slash Technique[]

The Quick-Slash Technique (抜討術, Nukiuchi-jutsu) is a style centered around quick-draw attacks, consisting of six forms:

  • Number One: Haze Draw (一式: (朧抜き) 抜き, Isshiki: Oboro Nuki): A quick-draw frontal attack, performed with a swing and then a downward slash.[4]
  • Number Two: Wind Hole (2式: 交差討ち, Nishiki: Kazaana): An frontal thrust with the tip of the sword, strong enough to leave a hole in the opponent's body.[9]
  • Number Three: Reverse Clap (3式: 逆拍子, Sanshiki: Gyaku Hyōshi): A quick downward slash from the side.[9]

Etymology[]

  • The surname Hoshina contains the kanji for "protect/protection, maintain, guarantee" (保, ho) and" family, department, section" (科, shina).

Trivia[]

  • The Hoshina Family crest represents a four-eyed demon mask. The demon mask represents the neutralization team, whereas the eye-knot is a symbol for unity.[10]
