Rin Shinonome (
Appearance[]
Rin is a short, beautiful young woman of a slim build, sporting medium length black hair with dyed cyan ends that reach her neck, with bangs on the left side of her face. She has big cyan eyes and sharp eyebrows, usually with a serious unfazed look on her face.[2] Before being promoted to Platoon Leader, her hair used to be totally black.[4]
In battle she wears the usual combat suit of the Defense Force.[1]
Personality[]
Rin is a serious woman who follows Captain Gen Narumi's order without question, despite letting her guard down sometimes. She is a calm individual who faces things correctly, still managing to have fun while doing so.[3] Rin also seem to take a liking in brave people.[1][3] Her brave and rigid behavior, however, is sometimes a shield to hide her deep emotions of joy and excitement. She also seems to secretly cultivate her physical appearance and beauty, believing herself to be extremely pretty and taking great pride in her gorgeous looks.
Behind her strong and menacing demeanor, Rin hides a huge admiration for Gen Narumi's strength, feeling these emotions ever since her first battle with him in the First Division. During the years, the desire to be acknowledged by him brought Rin to strive to become stronger and more beautiful, just to impress Narumi. To this day, she holds dear the memory of when Gen promoted her to Platoon Leader, and still struggles prove her worth and follow Gen's footsteps.[4] In fact, Rin's hidden closeness and deep link to her division comrades even pushes her to fight with her life on the line to fulfill her duty.
Rin seems to have a rivarly with Third Division Platoon Leader Tae Nakanoshima.[5]
History[]
After Rin joined the First Division as an officer, she had her first mission fighting alongside Captain Gen Narumi, with his power striking a feeling of admiration within Rin. During her days as officer, Rin wished to gain her captain's attention, pushing herself to train to become stronger and also try to appear even more beautiful.[4]
At some point, Rin was appointed Platoon Leader by Gen, much to her immense joy.[4]
Plot[]
Kaiju Weapon Arc[]
Rin took action with the rest of the First Division in Shinagawa when Ant-type kaiju emerged from the ground.[2] As Captain Narumi ordered her to grant support to Kikoru Shinomiya, Rin was twice saved from the latter due to her distraction. Irritated by Kikoru's skills, Rin approached her and declared that they would "get along just fine".[1] After the mission, Rin was present at Director General Isao Shinomiya's funeral.[6]
After that day, she kept training with Kikoru in order for the latter to surpass Rin and improve her skills.[6]
Cataclysms Arc[]
During the new No. 9-induced cataclysms, Rin and the rest of the First Division took action. Her platoon was dispatched in Oizumi, facing six Supergiant class Kaiju. Rin then was requested by Kafka Hibino to let him fight the giant monsters, but refused due to the possibility of Kaiju No. 9 individuating Kafka after his transformation. Then, both of them witnessed as Third Division Captain Mina Ashiro killed two Daikaiju while shooting from Tachikawa with her new Anti-Giant-Class Kaiju Rail Gun.[7]
The Second Wave Arc[]
After the appearance of Kaiju No. 13 in Oizumi,[8] Rin and Tachibana targeted it.[9] However, at the end of the fight, Rin stood powerless as No. 13 defeated most of the First Division main force and Tachibana by the throat.[10] In a last attempt to kill the kaiju, upon remembering her first mission with her captain, Rin ordered Tachibana to move as he rapid fired on No. 13. However, the kaiju's superior resistance allowed it to withstand the bullets and punch Rin, destroying her machine gun. Yet, she stood up more determined than ever, using a freezing bomb and a rifle to continue pummeling the kaiju hoping that Narumi would show up to defeat it, only for No. 13 to move behind her and punch her to the ground again. As Rin accepted that all she wanted was to follow Narumi's footsteps, No. 13 punched again to finish her. However, she was saved at the last minute by Kafka Hibino,[4] who despite Rin's order decided to transform and face No. 13.[11] As No. 13 powered up to defeat No. 8, the former's Fortitude level becoming 9.2, Rin shouted at Kafka to run away, beforing witnessing Kaiju No. 8's monstruous power as he sent No. 13 flying with one punch.[11]
Powers & Abilities[]
Overall Abilities: As a Platoon Leader of the First Division, Rin is powerful enough to neutralize several kaiju single-handedly. Her battle prowess, due to year of training, was even recognized by a strong officer and rising star of Kikoru's caliber. According to Gen Narumi, Rin has the potential to reach the rank of captain in the near future.[12] She is also stated to be the strongest Platoon Leader within the First Division.

- High Unleashed Combat Power: Rin is capable of using 73% of her combat suit's power, which makes her a great threat in combat, even against Identified Kaiju.[4]
Abilities[]
- Expert Sharpshooter: Rin is very skilled with her machine gun, excelling in taking distance when needed.[12]
- Expert Armed Combatant: As shown in her training with Kikoru, Rin is very proficient with staff close-range combat.[12]

Equipment[]
Combat Suit: Rin wears the usual combat suit on the battlefield.[1]
Respirator Mask: Rin wears a respirator mask in combat.[1]
Rifle: After the destruction of her machine gun, Rin uses a simple rifle in combat. She used one when she was an officer too.[4]
Gas Mask (formerly): Rin used to wear a full-face gas mask when she was a simple officer, discarding it after her promotion.[4]
Machine Gun (formerly): Rin carried a big machine gun which she uses to easily defeat multiple kaiju.[1] The weapon was destroyed by Kaiju No. 13.[4]
Etymology[]
- The first name Rin contains the hiragana for "phosphorus".
- The surname Shinonome literally means "daybreak/dawn".
Trivia[]
- Rin likes shopping, extremely spicy gourmet food and adversity.[3]
- People tend to think that Rin is scary, that's why she likes an unafraid and strong person like Kikoru.[3]
- As every Platoon Leader in the First Division, Rin dyed her hair out of respect for Captain Gen Narumi's strength.[13]
