Relationships

Family[]

Soshiro's Father[]

Despite most of their relationship being unknown, it seems rather negative since Soshiro remembers his father's words as those of someone who would repeatedly tell him to give up on his dream of joining the Defense Force. Despite this, Soshiro's father commended Soshiro's swordsman skills and felt sorry for him.[1]

Soichiro Hoshina[]

Soshiro has also a complicated relationship with his older brother. He greatly respects Soichiro's talent with the sword and firearms. Since childhood, Soshiro always wanted to defeat Soichiro and repeatedly challenged him to sparring matches,[2], losing each time and being teased afterwards.[3] Unbeknownst to Soshiro, his brother's taunts were because he was intimidated by Soshiro's improving swordsmanship, but the relentless teasing led him to cut ties with Soichiro as an adult, and the two brothers are not on speaking terms.[4]

Defense Force[]

Third Division[]

As the Vice-Captain of the Third Division, Soshiro is a highly esteemed member of the Defense Force, respected by everyone, from newbie trainees[5] to the Captain of the Division herself.[1] Soshiro's relationship to his division is so deep that he protects his base and comrades with his life and does whatever his fighting prowess allows to kill kaiju who threaten them.[1]

Mina Ashiro[]

Mina was the first person to ever see something in Soshiro's sword skills that could make him a valuable Force member. During their meeting years ago, Mina asked Soshiro to "be the one to clear the path when she shoots down a threat", and this culminated in Soshiro becoming her Vice in the Third Division.[1] Their relationship, albeit strictly professional, seems to be rather close, with them making fun of each others in some occasions[6] but still holding a great sense of gratitude and trust towards each other. Soshiro, in return, holds his position as her second-in-command with pride.[7]

Kafka Hibino[]

When Kafka first met Soshiro, the Vice-Captain could do nothing but laugh at the fact that he released 0% of his suit force.[5] After the events of the incident during the Aptitude Test, Soshiro noticed Kafka's vital signs suddenly went off, thus growing a great interest in the new examinee.[8] By having Kafka enter the Defense Force as his personal cadet,[8] Soshiro could see Kafka's true value with his own eyes and eventually grew high expectations on him, even preaching his support in the battlefield.[9] The good impression left on Soshiro, however, made the Vice-Captain turn a blind eye on the possibility that Kafka could be a kaiju, a choice that Soshiro later regretted when Kafka revealed his identity in a critical moment. [10] Despite this, Soshiro still showed gratitude to Kafka for saving Tachikawa Base and has shown concern towards his condition.[11] His respect for Kafka goes as far as offering to train him and to encourage him to steal his place as Mina's Vice-Captain, a role that apparently Soshiro would only entrust to Kafka.[7][12]

Leno Ichikawa[]

Despite not interacting much with each other, Soshiro values Leno highly, considering him one of the new officers, along with Kikoru, with the ability to become as powerful as a Captain.[13]

Konomi Okonogi[]

As the one that follows him the most, Konomi has shown respect and concern for Soshiro's sake, being seriously afraid for him when he faced Kaiju No. 10.[14][1] In return, Soshiro trusts her and is often accompanied by her.[6][15]

First Division[]

Gen Narumi[]

Soshiro has a complex and strained relationship with Captain Gen Narumi.[16] Gen seems to hold a grudge towards him after losing in the exam of small-size kaiju extermination, and now possesses a one-sided rivalry with the Vice Captain. Soshiro, though, mainly teases him for fun in front of the other members of the Third Division.[16]

Eiji Hasegawa[]

Despite the rivarly between their divisions and Gen's one-sided rivarly towards him, Soshiro seems to get along with fellow Vice-Captain Hasegawa, being cordial towards him and even happy to see him.[16]

Kikoru Shinomiya[]

While Soshiro sometimes teases Kikoru,[17][18] he views her as a highly capable and trustworthy subordinate. During her time in the Third Division, Soshiro recognized Kikoru's exceptional combat abilities, ranking her third strongest after himself and Mina Ashiro, equipped her with a personal weapon and made her a key figure in the Defense Force. Her abilities impresses him several times[19][20][21]. Kikoru herself also highly values Hoshina's abilities and often compares his fighting skills with her own. Their positive relationship continued even after Kikoru's transfer to the First Division.

It's implied that Soshiro is the one who taught Kikoru axe-weilding skills. [21]

Others[]

Kaiju No. 10[]

During the Raid at Tachikawa Base, while looking for a strong prey to kill, No. 10 found Soshiro on his path and promptly challenged him.[22] During the fight, both Soshiro and Kaiju No. 10 commended each other's fighting prowess, with Soshiro recognizing No. 10 to be at least as strong as No. 8[23] and No. 10 looking down on Soshiro despite admitting he gave him a good fight.[24] Despite being defeated, No. 10 appreciated the fight against Soshiro and became so obsessed with him that he is even willing to betray his creator, Kaiju No. 9, just to fight with Soshiro once again, even going as far as asking to be weaponized and become Soshiro's weapon.[15] After becoming his weapon, Soshiro's level headed strategic mind and No. 10's impulsiveness clash: the two constantly butt heads over how they should fight and who should command their attacks.[25] Though the two are polar opposites, they reach an understanding during their fight with Kaiju No. 12: the former admits that he finds fighting fun, and the latter willingly fights strategically.[2][26]
